unexpected evening

well - the evening itself was expected.  evenings usually come at the end of a day.  but this evening was unexpectedly rich.

chuck & hannah bought paul & i prezzies!  as a thank you to us for doing what we do - helping out around the house and with errands and with their most precious child and for making dinner and picking up dinner and being there in general - they had a table full of wrapped gifts waiting for us when we went over to their homestead for hanging outses.

these were the leeder presents (i'm leeder):

Stitchionary Volume One: Knit & Purl
Stitchionary Volume Two: Cables
Stitchionary Volume Three: Color Knitting
Knitting On the Edge
Knitting Over the Edge
Knitting Beyond the Edge (shipping in November)
and a set of Nancy's Knit Kards

podder (that's hubby) got three bags of starbucks coffee, a chemex drip coffee maker & filters, and starbucks syrups.

needless to say - we were overwhelmed.  as it was just my birthday a couple weeks ago i never thought all the presents on the table were for us.  but they were.  and it was so cool!  like christmas but surprisee-er.

it's amazing.  we really have built a family here.  we are blessed blessed blessed.

five-minute weekend review

Friday Night:
-had follow up with eye doctor to get contact lens prescription. in & out. was fine.
-went to Chuck & Hannah's house to help clean up in prep for their costume party/open house on saturday. my major jobs: holding penelope & dusting. good times.

Saturday Morning:

-hurricane-like weather outside. pouring rain and serious winds. i love a good rainy day.
-went to Chuck & Hannah's around noon to continue helping prepare for the 2:00 party.
-our costumes: me as hermione. i wore my graduation gown and a gryffindor scarf & hat i got at the party store. hub as arthur dent. he wore pajamas and a bathrobe and carried a towel.
-had a good time at the party. made a couple new friends. had good time with old friends. paul made his yummmmmy biscuits which went brilliantly with hannah's chili.
-post-party i did dishes. it was one of those times that i did unto others and it felt so good. at my own house i would have left the dishes - but i would have hated to wake up to them.
-got home around 11. straight to bed.

Sunday:
-woke up around 9, but really it was 8
-made a big batch of my oatmeal - mixed in frozen berries, splenda & cinnamon.
-woke paul up. he made breakfast for himself and i washed our dishes and then we watched SNL from last night. enjoyed beck immensely, hugh laurie was amusing in his british way.
-finished knitting a scarf and wove in the ends.
-puttered around the house. put stuff away, kitty litter, cleaned off the dining room table, took a shower. set up a few scarves to block on the table on towels. unfortunately my table isn't long enough so each scarf will be half blocked. if everything is dry when i wake up tomorrow maybe i'll have time to block the second halves of them all.
-worked on the trekking sock that hasn't been touched since april. finished sock one, finished toe of sock two. actually have bruised my index finger on my left hand from pushing those size one needles with it. it's painful enough that i can't knit anymore. thus the blog entry.
-watched a couple episodes of Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel. LOVE that show.
-just took my contacts out. time to get into bed.

nighty night.

Mexican Soup

1 can corn
1 can black beans
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can chicken stock
1 can fat free refried beans
1 jar salsa
1 can chicken (i used a can from TJ's)

Mix together in pot and heat until simmering. Salt & pepper to taste.
(This is a recipe I got from a Weight Watchers meeting. I tried it last night...it's super quick to make and it's good! I had it with a little fat free cheddar cheese sprinkled on top, and a couple fried slices of polenta cubed and mixed in. The WHOLE meal fits in the core plan, and it's very filling. It made enough for leftovers for lunch a couple days this week, and two containers went in the freezer as well.)

i'm going core...

after a couple days of research online, looking up recipes and food ideas, rereading my Getting Started guide, and freaking out - i've decided to switch to the WW core plan for the first time.

i've been doing the flex plan since i joined WW in january, but lately its getting harder and harder for me to have "trigger foods" in the house.  crackers, bread, snacks.  i start with a small portion of whatever and suddenly i'm justifying eating a whole sleeve of saltines.

soooo - this whole core thing looks interesting - and basically it seems like it's eliminating processed foods from my diet.  which is great.  it's actually where i WANT to be when i think in ideal terms.

today is day one (of the rest of my life)...right.

ummm - i'll let you all know how it goes.

not quite a snow day but...

i did end up staying home today.

i can't quite figure out why but both paul and i woke UP at 2am in the morning last night and couldn't get back to sleep at all.  i got up around 2:30 to look something up on the WW website and then went back to bed.  couldn't sleep.  realized paul was awake too.  i finally got out of bed at 4:00 and got a bowl of cereal thinking that if i filled my tummy i would be sleepy.  paul got up too and we watched an episode of iron chef.  when it got to be 5:15 i figured trying to get back to sleep at that point would only make it irritating when the alarm went off at 6.  soooo.  i emailed in to my boss and told her i was not a person who could not function without sleep and so i've been home one more day trying to fight the grumps that come along with three hours of sleep.  i have been trying NOT to nap so that tonight hopefully i can sleep through.

the only thing that has changed is that i went and bought that air purifier yesterday and that's been running in the bedroom.  i went and got it because paul had a SERIOUS asthma/allergy attack on sunday night and could barely catch his breath.  i figure between old-house dust and two cat pet dander the air could be purer.  but the machine isn't loud or anything so i'm pretty sure that's not what woke us.  but it wasn't even a sleepy awake.  we were both awake as if it was supposed to be awake time.

needless to say - i've been in p.j.'s all day

WIP inventory

one of today's projects has been & still is going through my knitting basket here in the livingroom and sorting out what projects i've got going, what's finished, and what yarn i've got in there that i may have forgotten about.

i should have taken a before & after picture but i'm not that smart.  everything is sorted into ziploc bags now though - and while not the prettiest way of storing things, it's very efficient at keeping projects & different yarns separated.

i'm about to update my sidebar with all projects that need finishing.  i ripped out quite a few things.  i decided that if i couldn't remember what it was or what it was going to be - it was not worth the energy of sorting out where i was in the pattern and continuing.  there's quite a few ends of skeins that i'll reball up with my ball winder for tidiness' sake.  and there are a few projects that i intend to finish up before starting anything else.

i've got a baby sweater here that just needs to be seamed up the sides & sleeves.  how bad is it that i can't recall what pattern i was using?  i need to be better at writing stuff down on a note card and sticking it in the ziploc bag with the knitted item.  i hope i wake up tomorrow and remember which pattern this was.

there are MANY projects that just need to have their ends woven in.  and i have a few items that need to be blocked.  i'm verrry bad about blocking.  this WILL be a project for tomorrow while i'm watching anne of green gables or pride & prejudice.

i did a bit of spinning today.  actually just plying to free up some bobbins.  navajo plying.  it's been since last winter that i used my wheel but it's apparently just like riding a bike.  very easy to pick up where i left off.  i still need lots of practice, though - i tend to overspin a bit and my skeins curl up on themselves.  tomorrow i will do some actual spinning.

happy birthday to me

i bought this for myself today.  in the bottom color.  browns & oranges.
so far it seems like the perfect size.  not as big as a tote.  not as small as a purse.  big enough to contain the essentials, a camera, and a knitting project.  i'm VERY excited to fill it up.

i also splurged on one of these and one of these. for organizational purposes of course :)

good day

yesterday was a good day.

first appt was with the eye doctor to have a contact lens exam.  it was easy-peasy.  in and out.  with Dr. Gill.  he's a cute Indian eye doctor who said "i think you look better with contacts."  heh.  charmer.  i used to wear contacts regularly a couple years ago but when my prescription ran out i never really pursued getting another one.  laziness.  ridiculous laziness.  NO MORE! :)  i have a follow-up visit next friday so he can see how these are going and if all is well i will get my actual prescription.  and you know where i'm getting my lenses after that?  BJ's.  heck yes.

the next appt i had was my haircut.  i went to Roots Hair Design.  friend Hannah recommended this place and i'm so glad i went there.  the stylist who cut my hair, Kim, really took the time to listen to what i wanted (able to pull it up, am not going to wake up and style my hair every morning, frames my face well) and it looks really nice.  she took about three inches off the longest bottom layer and more off the shorter layers.  it's really cute.  i'm interested to see how it looks after a shower & airdry.  this morning i got a look at what newhaircutbedhead looks like.  could be worse :)

post-haircut was my manicure & pedicure.  i went to Marybeth's in Hamilton.  the ladies there were very nice.  i was a little worried because this is definitely a place where Hamilton/Wenham wives go to get their posh little fingernails tended to - but the woman who did my nails, Brenda, was SUPER nice and chatty.  she did a great job on my nails and gave me good tips for maintaining them a little longer.  oh - and they're all doing WW at this nail salon and they're wicked cute about it.

i left the house around 9:30 and got home around 4:30 so it was a full day of activity.  we went over to Chuck & Hannah's around 6 and i got some good cuddle time with Penelope.

not sure really what's happening today - but i HOPE it includes some indian food.  :)  will let the faithful readers know.  hee.

oh childhood

Miss Rachel bought me

The Little Mermaid

for my birthday and it arrived yesterday!

I'm up early to watch it before my exciting MEday starts. I haven't seen this movie in AT LEAST ten years and it's such a memory. I know all the words to all the songs. And it's got this something that Disney movies released in the last five years sorely lack. I love it.

Thanks Rachel!!! :) You're such a great friend.

a wednesday list

  1. today is wednesday.  tomorrow is thursday.  but tomorrow's thursday is like friday because i'm taking friday off.  so today is like thursday.

  2. my bosses are taking me out to lunch tomorrow for my bday.  i'm going into this with the best attitude possible.  it's a free lunch.  and i'll be the least socially awkward person there.  this doesn't happen all that often.  i get to pick where i want to go and i think we're going to go to the Black Cow in Hamilton.

  3. i just had a Subway sandwich for lunch and allowed myself to have baked cheddar & sour cream lays.  and a diet coke.  very yummy lunch.  and because i waited until around 1 to go out and get it there's only 2.5 hours left in my day.

  4. tonight is a new Lost.  season 3 is not thrilling me as much as season 1 & 2 did...but maybe that's because i got to watch both of those on DVD and thus didn't have to wait a week between episodes.

  5. i've gotten more than usual done today so far.  or, rather, i've been less procrastinational.

  6. darn - my voicemail light is blinking.  i should check that.

  7. i want chocolate.

  8. i ordered these pens from Office Depot a couple weeks ago.  and i LOVE them.  i haven't mentioned it on this blog, but anyone who knows me knows my pen obsession.

  9. i'm worried i might be developing a slight allergy to wool.  not sure.  but i've worn scarves the past couple days and my neck is ITCHY even for a couple hours after i take the scarf off.  no adverse effects when i'm knitting with wool though.  hmmm...

  10. tonight i hope to take some photos of recently finished and on the needles knitting projects to post about.  we'll see how that goes.
